Sustainability Book Club

Museum & Art Gallery2 September 2026

Join the Sustainability Book Club.

Rooted in Words is our sustainability focussed book club situated in the Coffee House at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Every other month, we’ll read a book or essay with a different view on green narratives- these sessions will be a meeting point to discuss thoughts in a relaxed and kind environment. This is a judgement free space for discussion around sustainability in our day to day lives, and within our Museum environment, with all levels of knowledge welcome.

Join us for discussion, to listen and/or for hot drinks and cake in our Museum and Art Gallery café. No need to participate, all are welcome to come along and listen without pressure of joining in. Rooted in Words will take place on the first Wednesday of every other month at 2pm- check the schedule below for exact dates and to sign up.

Check below for the reading list month by month, should you like to join our reading journey!

The book club is FREE to attend, please check our website to be updated on what we are reading and when we will be meeting. Suitable for adults.

Book club dates for 2026/2027:

  • Wednesday 2nd September 2-3pm. Book: Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
  • Wednesday 4th November 2-3pm. Book: Eden by Tim Smit

Silent Spring created a huge impact when it was published in 1962. Documenting the effects of a harmful pesticide called DDT on both humans and the environment, the book made waves in increasing awareness of chemical malpractice.

Eden documents the making of the Eden Project in Cornwall, an incredible revitalisation of an old quarry through planting and architecture.
